Samantha is an Appaloosa mare born in 1990. Sam is the most experienced member of the CATR herd. She was once a hunter/jumper, but Sam has spent the last 15+ years perfecting her craft as a therapy horse. She is certainly a talented one!
At Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding, therapy horses like Samantha are the foundation of our program. Their forgiving temperaments, calm spirits and steady gaits bring joy, mobility and achievement to the children and adults with disabilities who ride at CATR. For each of our students, a therapy horse can be one of their most meaningful companions, providing them with a uniquely rewarding and life-changing experience.
We hope you will Pony Up for CATR! A donation of just $25 gives a student the most valuable piece of their therapeutic riding lesson – a therapy horse!
Area Therapeutic Riding (CATR) improves the lives of children and
adults with disabilities at the area's oldest nationally accredited
therapeutic horseback riding center. Since establishment in 1991, CATR’s
purpose has been to provide quality therapeutic riding sessions.
Ten Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International
(PATH Intl.) certified instructors, 150 volunteers, and twelve horses
together to serve over 150 students each year in three different
programs. Individual Therapeutic Riding Instruction is open to children
and adults with a disability. The Public School Program provides

special education classrooms from local public schools. CATR’s Veterans
Program delivers horsemanship skills and therapeutic riding to wounded
service men and women.
of CATR’s programs provide an exceptional therapeutic opportunity for
